WSCC - A Collaborative Approach to Learning and Health The new model calls for a greater collaboration across the community, across the school, and across sectors to meet the needs and reach the potential of each child.”

The development of the whole child is more than the acquisition of knowledge or skills, behavior or character it is all of these. More than merely a way to boost achievement or academics, the whole child approach views the collaboration between learning and health as fundamental. That’s what a whole child approach to learning, teaching, and community engagement really is about. “Each child, in each school, in each of our communities deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. And by utilizing the strengths across the whole community we will help your schools grow their focus on wellbeing and learning.Īs we stated in 2014 when the original WSCC Model was released Together along with specific WSCC planning, reflection, and summary sessions we will support your schools, your districts, and your communities in becoming healthier, more supportive, and more connected. The journey is made up of two distinct but aligned programs with one focusing on the Culture and the other focusing on Leadership. Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child and Whole Culture Today we ( BTS Spark) release our leadership journey focused on this new model. A focus on the transformative skills of our school leaders is necessary and when adjusting or building a whole school initiative, the role of this type of leader is imperative. We have assumed for too long that school leaders possess these skills, and we suppose that they appreciate their influence, however many school leaders are adept in the mechanics of school leadership and instruction, but less in the process of implementing whole school change and garnering buy-in.

We engage these key drivers of change in the process of change, and help ensure that the policies, processes, and practices across the school align, blend, and compliment.” An addition to the WSCC Model would therefore be the addition of culture, led by the influence of the school leader.īy focusing attention towards the school leader we prepare them with the skills and mindsets to implement change and to enhance their influence across the school community. Too many initiatives fail to make an impact because the model and culture do not match, and this is often because the initiative doesn’t have the overt and committed direction of the school leader. “The original WSCC Model has brought the sectors closer together but if there is one aspect that may be missing it is the underpinning influence of the school culture, led by the overarching direction of the school leader. Not that there were distinct gaps or holes but rather that we haven’t focused enough attention on the foundations that make change and initiatives succeed – the underlying Culture and the role of Leadership. This September I wrote an article describing what is missing from the original Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child, or WSCC Model.
